Alsace: A Beautiful Countryside to Explore in France

When you think about visiting France, typically the first destination that comes to mind is Paris. Everyone should see the Eiffel Tower at some point in their lives, but also consider taking in some of the beautiful countryside that France has to offer. One of those wonderful places to visit is Alsace. Alsace is located in the eastern France on the border of Germany. It’s the smallest region in France, but thanks to its placement, it’s the perfect environment for grape growing which leads to wine production. If you like the countryside and enjoy wine, Alsace is a wonderful destination.

You can get countless hours of enjoyment exploring the traditional villages of the area. The best way to take in this area is to follow the wine route, known as the Routes des Vins. It’s a clearly marked route that covers more than 170 km from north to south following along the eastern edge of the Vosges Mountains, where, if you’re a fan of italy skiing like me, you may also find some slopes action. You are able to take in the mountain views, villages made of timber and covered in flowers, and gorgeous vineyards. There are more than 50 different wines produced along the route, so there are plenty of chances to taste many different varieties.

Alsace is by no means the most travelled destination of France, but due to the popularity of the Route des Vins, the route itself can get a bit overrun with tourists in the summer season. However, if you do run into this crowding, it’s easy to go a bit off route and explore the quant villages on your own away from the others. The area is also littered with castles, a lot of them in ruins, to visit as well.

Visiting Alsace can be a great alternative to the typical destinations of France. If you’re a wine lover and would like to explore an authentic country side that time has seemed to not touch, this can be a great area to explore. A clearly marked route makes it easy to explore the quaint villages, mountain views, and vineyards, or you can choose to get lost in the countryside yourself and explore the wonderful things this area has to offer on your own.
